Materials-Manufacturing-Assembly

1. The railing system shall be made up of 2” Ø IPS composite reinforced PVC pipe meeting the following requirements:
   
   

   A.	Structural elements shall be fiberglass strands continuous throughout the rails and posts, encased by an outer PVC casing. Metallic inserts are not permitted
   B.	Outer casings shall be extruded PVC pipe or tubing formulated to resist impact and ultraviolet degradation.
   C.	PVC fittings shall be molded with the same formulation as the casings.
   D.	Kick plates, where required, shall be 4” high per standard design.
   E.	The railings, posts, fittings, and kick plates shall be standard bright white color as supplied by the manufacturer.

   
   
2. The structural elements of the railings and posts shall have the following minimum physical properties:
   
   

   A.	Tensile Strength	83,000 psi	ASTM D-3916
   B.	Flexural Modulus	5.0 x 106 psi	ASTM D-3916

   
   
3. The PVC components shall have the following minimum physical properties (using 0.125” specimens):
   
   

   A.	Izod impact, ft. lbs/in.	17.0	ASTM D-256
   B.	Tensile Strength	6,200 psi	ASTM D-638
   C.	Flexural Strength	12,000 psi	ASTM D-790

   
   
4. Design, manufacturing and assembly of components shall be in accordance with the following reference standards:
   
   

   A.	Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for Handrails.
   B.	American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) for Guardrails.
   C.	Standard Building Code (SBC) 1994 Edition, Paragraphs 1015 and 1608.2, Southern Building Code Congress International, Inc. (SBCCI) Birmingham, Alabama.

   
   
5. Installation of the railings shall be in accordance with the details shown on the drawings or at the direction of the engineer.
   
   
6. Kick plate shall be attached by straps, brackets, clamps, or by bolting to the posts.
   
   
7. Fittings shall be attached to posts and rails with medium bodied PVC solvent cement and shall be allowed to set in accordance with the instructions for use of the cement.
